This easy step-by-step method emphasizes correct playing habits and note reading through interval recognition. About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, scholar, and educator who composed 789 published works spanning multiple genres and instruments. His compositions include accordion and guitar methods, piano instruction books, a Hammond Chord Organ method, numerous solo pieces, and choral arrangements. These works have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish, extending his influence across the globe.
Palmer's scholarly contributions earned him distinction as a leading expert on Baroque music ornamentation, work that became foundational to the prestigious Alfred Masterworks series. He received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 for his musicological research. Additionally, he served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held membership in the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.
A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, Palmer studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in piano technique and improvisation fundamentals shaped his musical foundation. He attended Whitworth College and Millsaps College, where he continued performing accordion and piano on radio programs and with campus ensembles. After earning his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he studied at the Conservatory of Leipzig, Germany on a two-year scholarship. Palmer later joined the University of Houston music faculty, teaching the first successful college-level accordion courses for 18 years, while also serving as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for an extended period.

Morton Manus led Alfred Music Publishing as president for over six decades, from 1952 through 2016. The company itself traces its roots to 1922 when Sam Manus, a violinist and silent film music importer, founded Manus Music in New York City's Tin Pan Alley. In 1930, Sam merged his company with Alfred & Company, founded by Alfred Haase, creating the unified Alfred Music brand. Morton joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York, where he would later meet his wife Iris through a coworker's introduction.
Under Morton's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a sheet music publisher into a music education powerhouse. Beginning in the 1950s, he spearheaded the development of instructional methods across multiple instruments, launching series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. This strategic shift established Alfred Music as a leader in music education materials. The company's rapid expansion necessitated a major relocation in 1975, moving its headquarters to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most influential piano methods, which she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education degree, and a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from Northwestern University, and later received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Her musical training included studies with renowned pedagogues James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston.
At the University of Texas at Austin, she served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy, shaping the next generation of music educators. Beyond her academic work, Dr. Lethco maintained an active performance career, presenting recitals across the United States and serving as a clinician at numerous conventions. She also co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
