About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands out as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar who created 789 published works spanning multiple instruments and genres. His compositions include accordion and piano methods, a Hammond Chord Organ method, guitar instruction materials, numerous solo pieces, and choral works. Many of his publications have been translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. For many years, he served as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
Palmer's musical foundation was established early; he performed piano on the radio at age 13 and studied under Mae Vardeman, whose instruction in proper technique enabled him to develop strong improvisation skills. His college years at Whitworth College in Mississippi and Millsaps College included continued radio performances and ensemble work. Following his Bachelor's degree from Millsaps, he earned a two-year scholarship to study at the Conservatory of Leipzig in Germany and later completed post-graduate work at the University of Houston, where he taught the first successful college accordion courses for 18 years.
In his later career, Palmer devoted himself to researching Classical and Baroque music and refining teaching methodologies. He gained international recognition as an expert on Baroque music ornamentation, which informed the widely celebrated Alfred Masterworks series. His scholarly contributions earned him a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983. Palmer was affiliated with the Riemenschneider Bach Institute as a director and held membership in the American Federation of Musicians, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the late 1940s when he joined his father's company. A trained clarinetist and pianist, Manus held a business degree from City College of New York and brought fresh vision to the family enterprise that had been founded in Manhattan's Tin Pan Alley in 1922.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. In the 1950s, he spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, establishing Alfred as a leader in educational materials. The company's expansion continued through the following decades, culminating in a 1975 relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles and the opening of international offices in Australia, Germany, Singapore, and the UK.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve joined the business in 1988 and 1992 respectively, continuing the company's growth trajectory. A major milestone came in 2005 when Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, adding the EMI Catalogue Partnership to its portfolio and establishing a lasting relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most widely used piano methods, which she developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance and her Bachelor of Music Education degree from Northwestern University, followed by a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the same institution. Her studies also included work with renowned pedagogues James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, Douglas Moore at Columbia University, and Ruth Barr in Houston.
Throughout her career, Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and maintained a private teaching practice in New York City, San Antonio, Austin, and Houston. She received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi, and earned recognition in both the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
