About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as a globally celebrated musician, educator, and scholar whose influence spans multiple instruments and musical traditions. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age thirteen, he built his career on a foundation of accordion and piano study under Mae Vardeman, a mentor who cultivated his improvisational gifts through rigorous technique training.
Throughout his prolific career, Palmer created 789 published compositions encompassing accordion and piano methods, guitar instruction, Hammond Chord Organ materials, solo pieces, and choral works. His publications reached international audiences through translations into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became particularly renowned, earning him recognition as a world authority in this field and forming the basis for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological research.
Palmer's academic career included eighteen years teaching the first successful college-level accordion courses at the University of Houston after completing postgraduate studies there. He also directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and served as choir director of Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston for many years. His memberships included the American Federation of Musicians Local #65, the American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, beginning in the early 1950s. He inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded it in 1922 as Manus Music before merging with Alfred & Company in 1930. A skilled clarinetist and pianist with a business degree from City College of New York, Morty transformed Alfred Music from a sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education powerhouse.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music revolutionized its product line by developing instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company expanded dramatically over the following decades, requiring a relocation of its main office to Los Angeles in 1975 and a distribution center to upstate New York. In 2005, Alfred Music achieved a major milestone by acquiring Warner Bros. Publications and the rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership.

A Northwestern University graduate with degrees in Piano Performance, Music Education, and a master's degree in Piano Performance, she went on to become Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin.
Her education included studies with acclaimed musicians James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University. Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi honored her with an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree. Beyond her collaborative work on Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer and performed recitals across the United States.
