About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, individual piano lessons, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and a doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated the class piano program and directed the preparatory piano program at Eastern Illinois University, and spent summers from 1979 to 1982 teaching class piano and piano ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at major conferences including the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, among them Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, she and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students of all ages. Based in the Los Angeles area, she currently works as a clinician for Alfred Music alongside her university teaching responsibilities.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster held the position of Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently serves as an adjunct piano faculty member at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he developed the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy. He mentored more than 50 doctoral candidates in this field while also directing the group piano program and teaching pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. Throughout his tenure, he and his wife Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk operated a thriving independent piano studio in Norman from 1981 to 1996.
Dr. Lancaster has been deeply involved in professional service, holding leadership roles including National Chairman of Group Piano and National Chairman of Student Chapters for MTNA, as well as serving as 2020 National Conference Chair. His contributions have earned him significant recognition, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), and the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996). In 2013, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia named him a Signature Sinfonian in recognition of his excellence, and Murray State University honored him with the 2014 Distinguished Alumnus Award.
