About the Arranger: Davis Dorrough

Davis Dorrough brings decades of pedagogical expertise to every project he touches. After earning his Master of Music in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Oklahoma (where he studied with Jane Magrath and Barbara Fast) and his B.A. in Music from Arkansas Tech University, Dorrough has become a sought-after voice in keyboard education. He regularly presents at the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy, MTNA Conference, and Music Ed Connect, sharing insights drawn from both his teaching studio and his work as an author and composer.
Now serving as piano editor at Alfred Music, Dorrough shapes curricula and educational materials that reach teachers and students nationwide. His ten published books include the widely used Easy Piano Lead Sheets and Chord Charts series, and his original compositions have become classroom staples. Recognition from MTNA (including the MarySue Harris Studio Teacher Fellowship Award and MTNA Foundation Fellow Award) reflects his sustained commitment to strengthening music education at every level.
Why we love this
These arrangements nail the tricky balance between sounding current and staying within genuine 1A technique. Rather than dumbing down the songs, the arrangers preserve what makes each hit recognizable while building exactly the skills students need at this level. The integration with MakeMusic Studio turns these from sheet music into a complete learning ecosystem; you assign a piece, students access backing tracks, and you track progress all in one place.
What to expect
Playing these pieces feels like stepping into a radio-friendly world without the frustration of arrangements that overshoot your current abilities. There's an immediate sense of accomplishment when a student realizes they can handle something from today's charts. The combination of modern melodies and accessible technique keeps practice sessions energized rather than dutiful.
Who it's for
Early-level pianists (typically first year students) who need contemporary material that actually matches their technique level. Teachers working within the Alfred's Basic curriculum will find these pieces align perfectly with the progression their students are already following. Whether you're filling out a recital program, offering students choice in what they learn, or simply refreshing tired repertoire, these arrangements meet you there.
How to get the most out of it
- Match the tempo to the original recording using the included accompaniment as your reference, but don't hesitate to slow it down in early run-throughs. Getting the groove solid matters more than racing through.
- Pay attention to dynamic markings even in simple arrangements. A few well-placed crescendos and softer passages transform a basic melody into something that sounds polished.
- Let students listen to the professional backing tracks multiple times before they start playing. Hearing how their part sits in the mix builds confidence and prevents the "I'm just playing notes" feeling.
- Encourage hands-together practice from day one. These songs are designed so both hands can begin early, which keeps students engaged rather than stuck with endless right-hand-only work.
How to use it
Build a "student choice" recital set where each performer selects one piece from this collection; audiences connect instantly with familiar music, and students feel ownership over their selections. Alternatively, use these throughout the year as supplementary repertoire alongside your core curriculum, assigning one piece each month to reinforce whatever technique focus you're developing. They also work beautifully in informal coffee-house style performances where contemporary hits make sense for the venue and the audience.
Skills your students will build
- Reading the musical staff with confidence in both treble clef positions covered in Level 1A
- Maintaining steady tempo with accompaniment tracks
- Coordinating both hands with minimal note overlap in simple texture
- Recognizing and executing basic dynamic contrasts (forte, piano, mezzo-forte)
- Understanding phrasing through melodic contour rather than just measure lines
- Building listening skills by matching sound to notation
