About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a pianist and educator currently serving on the music faculty at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, private piano, and piano pedagogy. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University, her master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University, and her doctorate in piano pedagogy from Teachers College at Columbia University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held teaching positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She previously coordinated the class piano program and directed the piano preparatory program at Eastern Illinois, and during the early 1980s, she taught at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. Her scholarly work includes presentations at major national conferences such as the Music Teachers National Association, the Music Educators National Conference, the National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
As a prolific author and clinician, Dr. Kowalchyk has collaborated with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, to create more than 300 educational piano publications. Their works include the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. She and her husband operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma from 1981 to 1996. Today, based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her work as both a piano teacher and clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently teaches piano as adjunct faculty at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, completing his Ph.D. at Northwestern University.
Throughout his academic career, Dr. Lancaster spent nearly two decades as Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he established the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy in 1980. He mentored more than 50 doctoral students in that field and directed the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program, which blended group and private instruction for pre-college students. Recognition of his excellence came through multiple awards, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and the Outstanding Faculty Award in the College of Fine Arts (1996). Murray State University honored him with the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2014.
