About the Authors
Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk is a piano instructor and pedagogy specialist at California State University, Northridge, where she teaches class piano, private piano, and piano pedagogy courses. She earned her bachelor's degree in piano performance from Ohio University in 1977, followed by a master's degree in piano performance and pedagogy from Northwestern University in 1979, and completed her Ed.D. in piano pedagogy from Teachers College, Columbia University in 1989.
Throughout her career, Dr. Kowalchyk has held faculty positions at Eastern Illinois University, Oklahoma Baptist University, and the University of Oklahoma. She coordinated class piano programs, directed piano preparatory initiatives, and taught graduate level pedagogy courses. Her summers from 1979 to 1982 were spent teaching class piano and ensemble at the National Music Camp in Interlochen, Michigan. As a sought-after clinician and adjudicator, she has presented at numerous national conferences including those hosted by the Music Teachers National Association, Music Educators National Conference, National Group Piano Symposium, and the World Piano Pedagogy Conference.
In collaboration with her husband, Dr. E. L. Lancaster, Dr. Kowalchyk has authored over 300 educational piano publications, among them the widely used Alfred's Premier Piano Course and Music for Little Mozarts. From 1981 to 1996, the couple operated an independent piano studio in Norman, Oklahoma, serving students across all age groups. Currently based in the Los Angeles area, she continues her teaching work while serving as a clinician for Alfred Music.

Dr. E. L. Lancaster served as Executive Editor for Piano at Alfred Music and currently holds an adjunct piano faculty position at California State University, Northridge. He earned degrees from Murray State University and the University of Illinois, culminating in a Ph.D. from Northwestern University.
From 1979 to 1998, Dr. Lancaster was a Professor of Music at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, where he made significant contributions to piano pedagogy. He founded the master's and doctoral programs in piano pedagogy at OU in 1980 and mentored over 50 doctoral students in the field. His teaching excellence was recognized through numerous awards, including the Regents Award for Superior Teaching (1984), the Associated Distinguished Lectureship (1987), the Provost's Outstanding Academic Advising Award (1996), and a David Ross Boyd Professorship (1991), which honors faculty who excel in teaching and student guidance.
Beyond his university work, Dr. Lancaster has been active in professional organizations, serving as National Chairman of Group Piano and National Conference Chair for MTNA. He also held leadership roles with the National Conference on Piano Pedagogy. From 1981 to 1996, he and his wife, Dr. Gayle Kowalchyk, operated a substantial independent piano studio in Norman while he taught pre-college students through the Piano Pedagogy Laboratory Program. In recognition of his career achievements, he received the 2013 Signature Sinfonian Award from Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and was named a Distinguished Alumnus by Murray State University in 2014.
