About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career shaped music instruction across multiple instruments. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation under the mentorship of Mae Vardeman, whose emphasis on proper technique and improvisation proved transformative. His early studies in piano and accordion at Whitworth College and Millsaps College continued during radio performances and ensemble work, after which he pursued advanced training at the Conservatory of Leipzig on a prestigious two-year scholarship.
Palmer's compositional and pedagogical output proved extraordinary. He authored 789 published works spanning accordion, piano, guitar, and Hammond Chord Organ methods alongside hundreds of solo pieces and choral compositions, many translated into German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His scholarly contributions earned particular distinction; as a recognized authority on Baroque music ornamentation, his research became the foundation for the acclaimed Alfred Masterworks series. These achievements culminated in his receiving a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983.
Beyond composition and research, Palmer contributed significantly to music education and professional service. He taught the first successful college-level accordion courses at the University of Houston for 18 years and directed the Riemenschneider Bach Institute. His tenure as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston spanned many years, while his professional memberships included the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. for over six decades, starting in the late 1940s and leading the company until 2016. A clarinetist and pianist, he inherited the music publishing business from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 during New York's Tin Pan Alley era before merging it with Alfred & Company in 1930.
During his tenure, Manus transformed Alfred Music from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. He spearheaded the creation of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder, establishing the foundation for what would become the industry's leading educational methods and performance materials. The company expanded dramatically over the following decades, prompting a relocation of headquarters to Los Angeles in 1975 and a distribution center to upstate New York.

Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-creator of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, one of the world's most celebrated piano methods developed with Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. She earned degrees from Northwestern University, including a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, a Bachelor of Music Education, and a Master of Music in Piano Performance. Her advanced training took her to prestigious institutions where she studied with luminaries including James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University.
Dr. Lethco served as Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin and received an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Beyond Alfred's Basic Piano Library, she collaborated with Dr. Willard Palmer on Creating Music at the Piano. Her professional recognition includes listings in the International Who's Who of Musicians and the World Who's Who of Women.
