About the Authors
Dr. Willard Palmer stands as an internationally recognized musician, educator, and scholar whose prolific career spanned composition, performance, and instruction. A child prodigy who performed piano on radio at age 13, he built his musical foundation through early studies in piano and accordion under the tutelage of Mae Vardeman, whose guidance in technique and improvisation proved instrumental in shaping his artistic direction.
Palmer's compositional output totaled 789 published works, encompassing accordion and piano methods, a Hammond Chord Organ method, a guitar method, numerous solo pieces, and choral compositions. Many of these publications reached international audiences through translations in German, Japanese, French, Dutch, and Spanish. His scholarly expertise in Baroque music ornamentation became recognized worldwide and provided the foundation for the prestigious Alfred Masterworks series. Palmer received a Doctor of Humanities degree in 1971 and a Doctor of Music degree in 1983 in recognition of his musicological contributions.
Throughout his career, Palmer served as director of the Riemenschneider Bach Institute and held a faculty position at the University of Houston, where he taught the first successful college-level accordion courses for 18 years. He maintained a long tenure as choir director at Memorial Lutheran Church in Houston and remained active in professional organizations including the American Federation of Musicians, American Accordionists' Association, and the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

Morton Manus served as president of Alfred Music Publishing Co., Inc. from 1952 to 2016. He joined the family business in the late 1940s after earning a business degree from City College of New York. A clarinetist and pianist himself, Manus inherited the company from his father Sam, who had founded Manus Music in 1922 and later merged it with Alfred & Company in 1930.
Under Manus's leadership, Alfred Music transformed from a popular sheet music publisher into a comprehensive music education company. In the 1950s, he spearheaded the development of instructional series for accordion, guitar, piano, and recorder. The company experienced substantial growth through the following decades, prompting a 1975 relocation of its main offices to Los Angeles while establishing a distribution center in upstate New York. A major milestone came in 2005 when Alfred Music acquired Warner Bros. Publications, gaining rights to the EMI Catalogue Partnership and establishing a relationship with Warner/Chappell Music.
Manus's sons Ron and Steve continued the family legacy by joining the company in 1988 and 1992, respectively. Dr. Amanda Vick Lethco is best known as co-author of Alfred's Basic Piano Library, the internationally acclaimed method developed alongside Dr. Willard Palmer and Morton Manus. A Professor Emeritus of Piano Pedagogy at the University of Texas at Austin, she brought decades of teaching experience and artistic excellence to music education.
Her academic credentials include degrees from Northwestern University (Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Music Education, and Master of Music in Piano Performance) as well as an honorary Doctor of Humanities from Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Mississippi. Her teachers included distinguished musicians such as James Friskin at Juilliard, Rudolph Ganz at Chicago Musical College, and Douglas Moore at Columbia University. Beyond her landmark work with Alfred's, she co-authored Creating Music at the Piano with Dr. Willard Palmer.
