Why we love this

This collection pairs beautifully with Level 3 of Alfred's curriculum, using recognizable film, television, and musical theater sources to anchor new technical concepts in material students actually want to play. Gerou's arrangements balance authenticity with accessibility, preserving the character of each piece while keeping the pianistic demands aligned with the student's current abilities. The variety of styles and sources keeps adult learners engaged across weeks of consistent practice.

What to expect

Stepping into a world where your growing technical skills meet songs and themes you already know by heart. Whether it's the nostalgia of a beloved film score, the energy of a current pop hit, or the elegance of a timeless standard, each piece feels both fresh and familiar, turning familiar melodies into rewarding pianistic challenges.

Who it's for

Adult piano students working at Level 3 of Alfred's Basic Adult Course who want to apply newly learned skills to music they recognize and enjoy. These arrangements serve equally well for private studio instruction or group class settings where motivating repertoire matters.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the score for suggested fingering patterns before playing through; Gerou's choices often optimize hand position for the musical phrases at this level
  • Pay attention to dynamic markings and tempo indications as windows into the original source material's character; these details anchor your interpretation to the familiar version
  • Work through any rhythm-driven pieces (like The Imperial March or The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) slowly with a metronome first, then gradually release the click as muscle memory develops
  • Use the page-to-page correlation with your Lesson Book to identify which technique each arrangement reinforces, then practice that specific element intentionally within the piece

How to use it

Assign selections from this book alongside corresponding pages in your Lesson Book to reinforce new concepts immediately in repertoire students find motivating. The 14 titles give you flexibility to program one piece per week or group several by style (film themes, Broadway, pop, standards) across a semester of lessons.

Skills your students will build

  • Sight-reading at Level 3 difficulty across varied musical styles and genres
  • Rhythmic accuracy in popular styles (swing, pop, theatrical timing)
  • Dynamic control and phrasing in arrangements of recognizable melodies
  • Hand position and fingering efficiency in contemporary and standard repertoire
  • Tempo maintenance and expression within familiar musical contexts
