Why we love this

Alexander understands exactly what adult learners need: holiday arrangements that feel genuinely musical without oversimplifying the piano writing. These pieces sit comfortably within Level 2 technical boundaries while offering real satisfaction when played, making December practice sessions something students actually anticipate. The collection spans 14 beloved carols, giving you flexibility to assign pieces that match individual student interests and learning pace.

What to expect

The arrangements capture the warmth and familiarity of classic carols while maintaining musical integrity appropriate for developing pianists. Each piece breathes with clear textures and straightforward harmonic support that lets the melody shine. Playing through this collection creates genuine holiday atmosphere without technical frustration.

Who it's for

Adult piano students working through Alfred's Level 2 curriculum who want to perform recognizable holiday music during the winter season. This book pairs directly with Alfred's Basic Adult All-in-One Course, Book 2, making it an ideal reinforcement tool for students building foundational reading and technical skills. Teachers appreciate having attractive, substantive holiday repertoire that matches student level without feeling patronizing.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the melodic line against accompanying figures so the carol's familiar tune remains clear without sounding thin or exposed
  • Pay attention to phrase breathing and legato pedaling, especially in gentler arrangements like O Holy Night and Silent Night, where sustain enriches the harmonic colors
  • Practice the rhythmic patterns in Carol of the Bells and We Three Kings separately at a steady tempo before combining with the melody to build confidence
  • Use dynamic contrast between verses to create shape and maintain listener interest across longer pieces

How to use it

Assign carols individually throughout November and December as students reach appropriate technical readiness, then gather those who have learned multiple pieces for a holiday recital or studio celebration. You might also pair arrangements with community performance opportunities such as nursing home visits or church holiday services, giving adult students meaningful reasons to practice. The collection works equally well for home enjoyment during the season, encouraging regular practice outside formal lessons.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and performing Level 2 chord progressions and harmonic patterns
  • Sustaining melodic line clarity while managing accompaniment figures
  • Applying pedal technique to enhance harmony and create legato effects
  • Interpreting and shaping familiar melodies with appropriate phrasing and dynamics
  • Building performance confidence through recognizable, musically satisfying repertoire
