About the Composer: Mark Williams

Mark Williams

Mark Williams built a career around making band music accessible and rewarding for students at all levels. With over 200 published works and co-authorship of the Accent on Achievement Band Method, he shaped how countless young musicians learned ensemble playing. His influence extended far beyond publication: he clinicked and guest conducted across 34 states, five Canadian provinces, and Australia, bringing his philosophy of clear writing and musical substance directly to rehearsal rooms.

Based in Washington state for much of his teaching life, Williams specialized in elementary band and held degrees from Eastern Washington University. He performed professionally on bassoon, arranged for the 560th Air Force Band, and conducted the Spokane British Brass Band. His compositions earned recognition including the Gralia Competition at the Western International Band Clinic and multiple ASCAP Special Awards, cementing his reputation as a composer who understood exactly what young bands needed to play.

Why we love this

Williams writes concert music that actually sounds exciting to play, not just educational. The mixed meters and syncopated rhythms keep ensemble minds engaged without sacrificing clarity, and the fact that all sections get meaningful material means no one checks out during rehearsal. At Grade 2, this lands in that sweet spot where bands can tackle real musical expression without drowning in technical demands.

What to expect

Albemarle Fantasy bounces and propels through its syncopated opening before settling into a reflective, lyrical middle section. The writing feels modern without being needlessly complicated, with harmonies that catch the ear and rhythmic energy that keeps the piece moving forward. Beneath the driving rhythms and melodic lines sits a sense of genuine musical storytelling.

Who it's for

Concert bands at the Grade 2 level seeking a polished, engaging overture that sits comfortably in their technical range but challenges their musicianship. Directors preparing for concert or festival programs will find this piece both practical for rehearsal scheduling and substantial enough to represent the ensemble's work seriously.

How to get the most out of it

  • Lock the rhythmic precision of the syncopated allegro section by having players count and speak the rhythm aloud before adding the melody. The 3/4 with hints of 6/8 requires secure internalization.
  • Shape the andante section's reflective character by asking musicians to find one phrase that interests them personally and bring ownership to their lines rather than playing as accompaniment.
  • Balance the colorful harmonies by spotlighting each choir's contributions during sectionals; this piece works best when winds, brass, and percussion all understand when they carry the primary material.
  • Mark clear tempo relationships between the allegro and andante so the transition doesn't feel abrupt; the contrast should enhance rather than fracture the overall shape.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a concert opener or a centerpiece that showcases ensemble versatility without requiring an intermission to recover. Pair it with contrasting styles (perhaps a lyrical chorale or a lighter novelty number) to round out a concert program where Albemarle demonstrates the band's ability to handle multiple musical moods.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and internalizing syncopated rhythms in 3/4 time with implied 6/8 subdivision
  • Executing tempo and meter changes between allegro and andante sections
  • Balancing inner harmonies while maintaining rhythmic precision in all sections
  • Shaping melodic lines with consistent phrasing across extended passages
  • Ensemble blend and balance across choirs in colorful harmonic contexts
