About the Composer: William Owens

William Owens

William Owens (b. 1963) earned his music degree from Chicago's VanderCook College of Music in 1985 and spent 30 years as a band director in Texas before retiring in 2014. A prolific composer, he has created over 300 works for concert band, string orchestra, and small ensemble since 1993, establishing himself as a defining voice in young band literature through his practical, direct approach to composition.

Owens has received commissions from the South Plains College Department of Fine Arts, Phi Beta Mu International, and the American Bandmasters Association. His works appear regularly on festival and contest lists across North America, and he remains active as both a clinician and conductor. He holds membership in ASCAP, the Texas Music Educators Association, and Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity, and was named a Distinguished Alumnus by VanderCook College.

Why we love this

Owens writes concert openers that actually work: this fanfare delivers immediate impact without asking for polish beyond what a developing band can achieve. The structure moves efficiently from statement to harmonic exploration to triumph, giving conductors a piece that programs well and sounds genuinely impressive after modest rehearsal time.

What to expect

The piece radiates ceremonial energy, opening with bold, forward-moving lines before settling into a more introspective middle that explores harmonic color. The final section restores the initial grandeur, delivering the satisfaction of a well-earned arrival.

Who it's for

Developing concert bands (Grade 1.5 ensembles) preparing opening concert music or festival selections. Directors looking for a short, confident opener that builds ensemble musicality without excessive technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the opening statement with confidence from the outset. Young bands tend to underplay fanfare material, so encourage full commitment to the initial thematic material even if volume is modest.
  • Highlight the texture changes in the middle section through intentional balance work. When harmonic shifts occur, ensure inner voices sustain their lines clearly so the harmonic movement reads to the listener.
  • Build steadily toward the closing without rushing. The triumphant material needs space to arrive; pacing matters more than tempo here.

How to use it

Open your concert with this piece to set an energetic, professional tone. Its duration and impact make it ideal for pre-contest warm-up programs or as the first selection before longer or more demanding works.

Skills your students will build

  • Balanced ensemble articulation in fanfare style
  • Sustained harmonic awareness across section changes
  • Dynamic control from ensemble statement to fuller texture
  • Phrasing and architectural thinking in short form
