About the Composer: Melody Bober

Melody Bober

Melody Bober composes with her students' growth at the center of every decision. She holds a bachelor's degree in music education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana (summa cum laude) and earned a Master of Arts in piano performance from Minnesota State University, Moorhead, where she studied under Joel Shapiro and Andrew Froelich. Her musical foundation was shaped by Mary Hoffman's approach to music education and Tony Caramia's jazz instruction.

For two decades, Bober taught in public schools before moving into private studio instruction and university-level work. She remains active as a church pianist, accompanist, and former music director. Her reputation as both a clinician and composer has made her a sought-after presence at piano teacher conventions and workshops across North America. She lives in Minnesota with her husband Jeff.

Why we love this

Bober designs her pieces to feel genuinely fun to play without sacrificing musical substance. The syncopated rhythms and melodic hooks here make it the kind of piece students actually want to practice, while the keyboard range keeps hands engaged across the entire instrument.

What to expect

Playful intrigue with a modern edge. The syncopation keeps things unpredictable while the melodic lines stay accessible enough to be immediately satisfying. There's a sense of mischief underneath everything, like a musical plot unfolding at the keys.

Who it's for

Intermediate pianists ready to move beyond simple accompaniment patterns and explore rhythmic sophistication. This piece rewards students who can manage a moderate tempo with confidence and want to claim the stage with something genuinely engaging.

How to get the most out of it

  • Map out the syncopated rhythms on the page before playing through; tapping hands separately at half speed locks in the pocket without rushing into the catchy figures.
  • Treat the melodic hooks as the main event. They should sing clearly, which means the accompaniment stays rhythmically snappy but not loud.
  • Use the full keyboard as your canvas. Planning your hand position for the wider jumps prevents hesitation and keeps the flow alive through phrase endings.

How to use it

Pair this with other intermediate character pieces for a recital showcasing diverse compositional voices, or use it as a solo moment in a mixed student/faculty concert where personality matters as much as technical display. It works especially well as the closing piece in a student recital lineup because audiences leave with the catchy melody still in their heads.

Skills your students will build

  • Reading and executing syncopated rhythmic patterns
  • Independent hand coordination across the keyboard
  • Voicing melody clearly while maintaining rhythmic accompaniment
  • Range navigation and hand position planning for wide intervallic jumps
