About the Composer: Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh was born in Ventspils, Latvia in 1943 and immigrated to Canada with his family five years later. His conservatory training spanned four institutions: the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, the University of Toronto, the Akademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the University of British Columbia. His compositional output covers every major genre, from solo voice through opera, and his works have been commissioned and performed across six continents in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and Roy Thomson Hall to the Glinka Capella in St. Petersburg and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Raminsh has founded four ensembles: the Prince George Symphony, the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan, NOVA Children's Choir, and AURA Chamber Choir. His honors include the Outstanding Choral Composition Award from the Association of Canadian Choral Communities, the Distinguished Visiting Alumnus Award from the University of Toronto, and appointment as an Officer in the Order of the Three Stars of the Republic in Latvia. His published works appear through Boosey and Hawkes, Colla Voce Music, Alliance Music, Alfred Music, Walton Music, and Plangere. A deep connection to the natural world, cultivated through years working as a seasonal park naturalist in British Columbia, informs the character of his music.

Why we love this

Raminsh brings the sensibility of a conductor who has shaped choral ensembles for decades, which shows in writing that sits idiomatically for each voice while remaining genuinely rewarding to sing. The text setting respects both linguistic weight and musical line, creating an intimate quality that resonates in concert settings without requiring elaborate staging or interpretation.

What to expect

A contemplative work that unfolds with restraint and emotional clarity. The writing balances moments of textural density with passages of transparent beauty, creating a sense of intimate devotion rather than grand proclamation.

Who it's for

SATB choirs preparing sacred or festival repertoire that calls for musical substance without excessive technical demands. Ensembles seeking works rooted in text setting that carries both spiritual weight and compositional craft will find this piece serves both artistic goals and practical rehearsal needs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the inner voices carefully during block chords; the sopranos and basses often carry harmonic color that can easily disappear if altos and tenors aren't heard with clarity.
  • Shape phrases by considering the natural breathing points in the Hebrew text, allowing the language itself to inform your phrasing rather than imposing arbitrary symmetry.
  • Record sectionals and ask singers to listen back at home; this piece rewards careful intonation tuning that improves with repeated exposure to how their voice sits within the harmonic structure.

How to use it

Pair this with other sacred works from different traditions to build a concert exploring spiritual text across cultural contexts. It functions equally well as a centerpiece in a secular choral concert where the focus lands on compositional integrity rather than liturgical function.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending sustained tones across multiple voice parts without vibrato interference
  • Hearing and maintaining independent melodic lines within four-part texture
  • Approaching text with linguistic sensitivity while maintaining musical phrase integrity
  • Intonation refinement through careful attention to harmonic function
