About the Composer: Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh

Imant Raminsh was born in Ventspils, Latvia in 1943 and immigrated to Canada with his family five years later. His conservatory training spanned four institutions: the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, the University of Toronto, the Akademie Mozarteum in Salzburg, and the University of British Columbia. His compositional output covers every major genre, from solo voice through opera, and his works have been commissioned and performed across six continents in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and Roy Thomson Hall to the Glinka Capella in St. Petersburg and the Forbidden City in Beijing.

Raminsh has founded four ensembles: the Prince George Symphony, the Youth Symphony of the Okanagan, NOVA Children's Choir, and AURA Chamber Choir. His honors include the Outstanding Choral Composition Award from the Association of Canadian Choral Communities, the Distinguished Visiting Alumnus Award from the University of Toronto, and appointment as an Officer in the Order of the Three Stars of the Republic in Latvia. His published works appear through Boosey and Hawkes, Colla Voce Music, Alliance Music, Alfred Music, Walton Music, and Plangere. A deep connection to the natural world, cultivated through years working as a seasonal park naturalist in British Columbia, informs the character of his music.
