About the Composer: Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell

Randall Hartsell discovered composition through the literature he studied in English class during high school, crafting piano pieces inspired by the stories and poems he encountered. Starting with limited access to an instrument (practicing daily at his aunt and uncle's house before his parents could afford their own piano), he developed a deep understanding of what motivates young musicians to keep working. After studying at East Carolina University and beginning a teaching career in a small town, he returned to composition with renewed purpose. A chance meeting with publisher Lynn Freeman Olson in the early 1980s redirected his trajectory, leading to his first major success with the Something Special series in 1990.

Now based in Charlotte, North Carolina, Hartsell has published more than 60 collections and solos while maintaining an active schedule as a teacher, accompanist, clinician, and church musician. His compositional voice remains rooted in the principle that inspired those early pieces: music should speak directly to the player's experience and emotions. His writing consistently demonstrates how accessible melodies, clear harmonic progressions, and thoughtful pedagogy can coexist in genuinely musical works.

Why we love this

Hartsell's gift for writing music that feels substantial without requiring virtuosity makes this piece ideal for students building confidence. The lyrical melody unfolds naturally under the fingers, inviting expressive playing without technical hurdles that distract from musical storytelling. You'll find the three-page length strikes the right balance between ambition and achievability in a lesson or recital program.

What to expect

The title evokes something expansive and uncluttered, a sense of reaching upward through clear air. The music mirrors this feeling through its flowing melodic line and spacious harmonic backdrop, creating a contemplative piece that invites the listener into a moment of personal reflection.

Who it's for

Students in the intermediate grade levels who have solid note-reading skills and are ready to explore lyrical expression without technical overwhelm. Teachers seeking repertoire that rewards careful listening and musical decision-making, not just accurate finger placement.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape the melody through dynamic control rather than tempo fluctuation; let the accompaniment remain steady as the right hand breathes through phrase peaks and valleys.
  • Establish the harmonic rhythm early in practice by playing hands separately and counting through the accompaniment pattern before combining hands.
  • Approach the piece as a vocalist would; imagine the melody as a sung line and allow natural rubato in places where the accompaniment permits it.
  • Listen to how silence and space between phrases matter as much as the notes themselves; resist the urge to fill every moment with sound.

How to use it

This works beautifully as a recital solo for the student seeking something with genuine artistic depth, or as a concert opener that sets a lyrical tone before more energetic selections. Its three-page length fits naturally into a well-paced student showcase or studio recital without requiring extended stage time.
