About the Arranger: Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett

Roland Barrett is a composer and arranger whose work spans multiple ensemble contexts, from symphonic and concert bands to chamber groups and marching ensembles. His catalog includes over two hundred published compositions and arrangements, many of which have earned performances by All-State and All-Region Honor Bands, regional wind symphonies, and national broadcast exposure on NPR and cable networks.

At the University of Oklahoma, where he joined the faculty in 2001, Barrett teaches music theory and composition with particular emphasis on twentieth-century topics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. He continues to serve as the primary arranger for the university's marching band while maintaining active recognition through multiple ASCAP awards and invitations to contribute at major conferences including the Midwest Band and Orchestra Convention and International Trumpet Guild gatherings.

Why we love this

Barrett's arrangement strikes a genuine balance between accessibility and musicality that Grade 3 bands rarely achieve. The medley doesn't simply string carols together; instead, each tune maintains its own character and emotional weight, allowing your ensemble to showcase genuine musical sensitivity rather than just executing notes. The 248-page conductor score gives you real interpretive options, making this work equally satisfying for developing players and seasoned ensembles.

What to expect

The work captures the genuine emotional spectrum of the holiday season—from the anticipatory energy and childlike wonder of Christmas morning to the quiet contentment of family gatherings and the gentle peace of Christmas Eve. Barrett's arrangement never forces sentimentality; instead, the familiar melodies and straightforward harmonies invite your audience into a shared musical memory.

Who it's for

This arrangement serves concert bands at the upper-middle school level through early high school, or any ensemble seeking accessible holiday repertoire with real musicality and substance. Directors looking for a single concert piece that delivers genuine musical satisfaction rather than novelty appeal will find this medley stands apart from typical seasonal fare.

How to get the most out of it

  • Shape each carol's melodic line independently rather than treating the medley as a continuous flow. This variety refreshes the listener's ear and highlights the distinct character of each tune.
  • Balance the accompaniment carefully in the thicker textures. Grade 3 band arrangements can muddy quickly, so require clarity from inner voices and harmonic parts before adding dynamic shaping.
  • Consider the pacing between carols. Brief, deliberate pauses allow the audience to absorb the closing of one tune before entering the next, deepening the emotional arc across the full medley.
  • Engage your lower woodwinds and brass in sustained harmonic passages; their tone quality and support anchor the entire ensemble and give melodic statements room to breathe.

How to use it

This medley works beautifully as the centerpiece of a holiday concert's second half, offering a natural focal point that both performers and audiences embrace. It pairs well with lighter concert band selections in the first half, allowing you to build toward this emotionally resonant climax without exhausting your ensemble's stamina on technical demands.

Skills your students will build

  • Melodic independence within an ensemble texture
  • Sustaining consistent tone quality in longer harmonic passages
  • Musical phrasing and phrase shaping across multiple sections
  • Balance and blend among woodwind, brass, and percussion voices
  • Attention to character and mood contrasts within a single work
