More about this title

About the Composer: Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin

Joseph M. Martin earned his degrees in piano performance from Furman University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he later taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department. His performance career has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including a nationally broadcast recital and appearances with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra as winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition.

Today, Martin channels his classical training and performance experience into compositions and arrangements for worship and concert settings. His music appears in venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to small-town churches, and his gift for blending accessibility with musical substance has made him a trusted voice in faith-based choral music. He lives in Austin, Texas with his family.

Why we love this

Martin constructs this cantata as a series of discrete moments rather than a sprawling narrative, letting each carol and original anthem breathe on its own terms. The orchestrations prove remarkable in their economy; you can execute the work with a small ensemble without sacrificing color or impact. The inclusion of Scripture-based narration anchors the musical selections in the Christmas story, giving your singers something real to serve rather than generic festive sentiment.

What to expect

There's a sense of quiet confidence here rather than overwrought celebration. The orchestrations shimmer with warm colors; harp and strings create an intimate quality even when the full ensemble plays. The combination of familiar carols alongside Martin's original settings creates a landscape that feels both comforting and fresh, grounded in the Christmas message without sentimentality.

Who it's for

Churches and faith communities seeking a Christmas program that feels substantial without requiring a large instrumental ensemble. Directors working with volunteer singers and musicians will appreciate the accessibility alongside genuine musical craft. This works equally well for concert settings where a hybrid of carolistic tradition and contemporary anthem style appeals to your audience.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the narration carefully in rehearsal so text remains clear without overwhelming the choir and orchestra. The spoken portions frame the music, not compete with it.
  • Experiment with tempo relationships between movements. Martin's varied tempos create natural energy shifts; resist the urge to smooth everything into a uniform pace.
  • Use the Split Tracks and Part Dominant Tracks during sectional rehearsals to lock ensemble balance before adding full orchestral color with the Accompaniment Tracks.
  • Engage your orchestra players early in the rehearsal process. The colorful instrumentation (harp and horns particularly) carries significant musical weight and needs time to integrate with the choir.

How to use it

Build your December concert entirely around this work, letting the cantata structure and Scripture narration serve as the backbone of your service or performance. Alternatively, pull individual movements for your existing Christmas program; the shorter selections like 'Come, Graceful Rose' and 'Beautiful Star' integrate seamlessly into mixed programming. The opening 'Overture of Joy' and closing 'Cantique de Nöel' work particularly well as anchor pieces for other repertoire.

Skills your students will build

  • Singing within a narrative framework and responding to spoken text cues
  • Blending with instrumental colors, especially sustained orchestral textures in the harp and strings
  • Maintaining clarity on Scripture text while managing musical demands
  • Navigating varied tempos and meter changes across contrasting movements
  • Ensemble balance in smaller mixed voice settings
