More about this title

About the Composer: Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney

Vicki Tucker Courtney began piano study at age four and built her musical foundation through classical training and years of choral accompanying at North Texas State University. Her career spans composing and arranging for choirs, piano, handbells, and solo voice, with recognition including multiple ASCAP Plus Awards and mentorship from Dove Award winner Mark Hayes.

Since 2009, when she published her 100th title, Courtney has maintained a prolific output, reaching over 350 published works by 2017. She continues to compose full time while maintaining an active schedule of church music direction, piano instruction, and composition tutoring in her home of Columbia, Tennessee.

Why we love this

Courtney writes with a clear understanding of how voices move together, which shows in the accessibility of this piece across multiple voicing options. The TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB flexibility means you can program it confidently regardless of your choir's changing roster.

What to expect

The piece carries the warmth of Courtney's choral background, with writing that feels both singable and musical. As a secular work, it offers flexibility for concert programming, community events, or settings where liturgical music isn't called for.

Who it's for

This piece works for any mixed choir ranging from smaller TB formations to full TTBB sections. It suits directors seeking secular choral literature that sits well in the voices without requiring extensive range or technical demands.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the piano accompaniment to support rather than cover the voices; the digital download format gives you control over playback levels in rehearsal and performance.
  • Mark phrase endings clearly in your score so singers understand where musical sentences breathe, especially across the gender-divided voicings.
  • With multiple voicing options available, prepare singers to listen to their specific part while maintaining ensemble blend across the whole choir.

How to use it

Include this in a concert program that mixes secular and sacred works, or use it as a community outreach piece when programming for non-church venues. The digital format makes it easy to add to spring or fall concerts without long lead times on printed octavos.

Skills your students will build

  • Blending across divided voice parts (TB/TTB/TBB/TTBB)
  • Responding to piano accompaniment cues
  • Sustaining tone through phrase shapes in secular repertoire
