Joseph M. Martin holds degrees in piano performance from Furman University and the University of Texas at Austin, where he also taught in the Piano Pedagogy Department for five years. His career as a solo pianist has taken him across the United States and Mexico, including performances with major symphony orchestras and recognition as winner of the Nina Plant Wideman Competition, which led to a featured performance with the Guadalajara Symphony Orchestra.
Though Martin's music has graced stages from Carnegie Hall to regional theaters, his recent focus has centered on creating works for worship and church music conferences. His compositions and arrangements now reach audiences in sanctuaries across North America, reflecting a deliberate shift toward music that serves congregational and liturgical settings. He resides in Austin, Texas with his family.
Why we love this
Martin and Angerman have crafted a piece that balances accessibility with genuine musical substance. The five-page format works perfectly for choirs seeking meaningful material without overwhelming rehearsal demands, and the text naturally invites singers into genuine expression rather than hollow enthusiasm.
What to expect
The piece radiates warmth and affirmation without sentimentality. Singers experience the satisfaction of solid four-part writing that feels both crafted and natural, creating a musical space where celebration feels earned rather than imposed.
Who it's for
This octavo suits intermediate to advanced community choirs, festival ensembles, and church choirs looking for secular repertoire with real substance. It works equally well for choirs prioritizing programming variety and those wanting meaningful concert material that avoids both triviality and excessive difficulty.
How to get the most out of it
Encourage the singers to find the specific emotional anchor in each phrase. A joyful life requires intentionality, and that specificity will shine through in their tone.
Balance the four parts carefully during transitions between sections; uneven voice leading can muddy what should feel clear and celebratory.
Let the text inform your tempo choices. Sometimes what feels joyful in the rehearsal room needs adjustment in a larger acoustic space.
How to use it
Slot this into a spring or fall concert where you want to shift the emotional landscape after heavier works, or use it as a closing number when you want the audience to leave with genuine uplift. It also serves community choir festivals and secular choral competitions seeking repertoire with integrity.
