Description
This merry madrigal will be a nice addition to your 3-part choir's a cappella seasonal repertoire. Characteristic counterpoint makes this original Donald Moore piece a familiar form but, unlike many Renaissance chorals, the vocal ranges, subject matter, and number of voice parts have been specifically designed for developing choirs. A festive feature for holiday concerts and Madrigal feasts, with just enough optional bass notes in the 3-part mixed/SAB for your developing men's section.

About the Composer: Donald Moore

Donald Moore

Donald Moore earned a Bachelor of Music in organ performance and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Kent State University. Currently serving as Organist-Choirmaster at Pilgrim United Church of Christ in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, Moore has become one of the most published composers in American choral music, with over 500 works distributed through Alfred Music Publishing, Hal Leonard, Heritage Music Press, and other major publishers.

Moore's catalog spans sacred anthems, secular chorals, educational pieces, organ works, and instructional texts. His compositions appear regularly at state contests and music festivals nationwide, and he has received seventeen ASCAP Composers Standard Awards. The American Choral Directors Association recognized him among 400 significant composers in the history of American choral music.

Why we love this

Moore understands the realities of developing choirs. Rather than adapting a Renaissance madrigal down to the lowest common denominator, he crafted an original that honors the form while respecting what your singers can actually accomplish. The counterpoint breathes naturally for young voices, and the optional bass line means your emerging tenor-bass section has something meaningful to sing instead of doubling sopranos.

What to expect

Bright and celebratory, with the intellectual playfulness of a true madrigal but none of the stuffiness. The voices weave around each other in familiar Renaissance patterns while delivering festive subject matter that feels both genuinely seasonal and genuinely fun to sing.

Who it's for

This octavo works best for developing SSA or SAB choirs ready to tackle counterpoint without the difficulty of authentic Renaissance texts or extreme ranges. It suits choirs preparing for holiday concerts or madrigal feasts and gives singers real experience with the madrigal genre in an approachable package.

How to get the most out of it

  • Balance the three parts by seating singers so that all lines can be heard distinctly; avoid clustering sopranos downstage where they drown out the other voices
  • Work the counterpoint slowly in separate sections before combining parts, highlighting where lines intersect or imitate each other
  • Bring out the festive character through articulation and rhythmic clarity rather than rushing the tempo; madrigals thrive on precision

How to use it

Open a holiday concert with this piece to set a warm, sophisticated tone before moving into your heavier seasonal repertoire. It also works beautifully in a madrigal feast context, where its brevity and brightness can anchor a shorter set or transition between courses.

Skills your students will build

  • Renaissance counterpoint and voice independence
  • Reading SSA and SAB voicings within a single piece
  • A cappella blend and intonation without instrumental support
  • Madrigal style and articulation
