About the Arranger: Marilynn Ham

Marilynn Ham

Marilynn Ham's reputation as an arranger of advanced sacred piano music stretches across the country, built on more than twenty-five published collections and a career spanning decades in higher education. She holds degrees from Northern Michigan University and the University of Wisconsin, and has served as Artist-in-Residence and Assistant Professor of Music at Bethel College in Indiana since 1989, where she teaches applied piano rooted in sacred and classical traditions. Her early years, the oldest of fifteen children in a musical Michigan household, shaped her deep connection to church music and the piano.

Why we love this

Ham's arrangements strike an uncommon balance: they're sophisticated enough to challenge an accomplished pianist, yet they honor the emotional weight of these beloved ceremony pieces rather than burying them in technique. The collection moves you through an entire wedding arc with genuine variety, mixing Bach-Gounod's timeless Ave Maria with contemporary choices like You Raise Me Up, all at a level where the arranging craft is audible and respectful.

What to expect

Elegant and purposeful. The book carries you from the formal dignity of a processional through moments of lyrical tenderness and back to joyful closure, maintaining a consistent level of musical maturity throughout. You'll find yourself reaching for these arrangements repeatedly because they trust the listener's intelligence.

Who it's for

Wedding pianists who need a complete, cohesive collection spanning the entire ceremony without having to patch together sources. This works equally well for pianists preparing for their first wedding gig or for experienced church musicians wanting trusted, well-crafted arrangements that honor both classical standards and meaningful contemporary songs.

How to get the most out of it

  • Study the voicings in the classical arrangements (Bridal Chorus, Ave Maria) first to establish your harmonic grounding; they'll inform how you approach the interpretive flexibility in the contemporary selections.
  • Balance the accompaniment texture in songs like How Beautiful and I Will Be Here so the right hand melody remains uncluttered; these pieces live or die by clarity of line.
  • Plan your registration and dynamic shape across the full ceremony arc before rehearsal; knowing whether a piece needs intimate restraint or full resonance changes how you prepare each transition.

How to use it

Perfect for church pianists building a wedding season repertoire or for studio teachers whose advanced students are booking ceremonies. The forty pages also make an excellent foundation for a sacred piano recital, allowing you to program selections from the collection alongside other concert works without needing to hunt across multiple books.

Skills your students will build

  • Voicing interpretation across classical, sacred, and contemporary harmonic languages
  • Balancing ornamental figuration with melodic clarity in arrangement contexts
  • Pedal technique for resonance and clarity at advanced levels
  • Sight-reading preparation and efficient learning strategies for a full-length program
