About the Arranger: Alice Parker

Alice Parker

Alice Parker's career spans decades of deep engagement with American vocal music. After studying at Smith College and Juilliard, where she began her landmark collaborations with Robert Shaw, Parker went on to create hundreds of published works including operas, cantatas, and choral suites alongside her celebrated arrangements of folksongs, hymns, and spirituals. Her influence on choral music extended well beyond composition; she founded MELODIOUS ACCORD, INC. in 1985 to center her work on melody itself, later publishing influential texts on choral improvisation and congregational singing.

Parker's contributions to American music education earned her recognition as Distinguished Composer of the Year by the American Guild of Organists, the Robert Shaw Award from ACDA, and six honorary doctorates. She served as Director Laureate of Chorus America and was named a Fellow of the Hymn Society. Her legacy rests not only on the breadth of her catalog but on her unwavering focus on making singing joyful and accessible to all voices.

Why we love this

Parker's gift for harmony and her intimate knowledge of how treble voices blend make this collection sing with warmth and clarity. The 2-part writing serves both singers and directors well: it's sophisticated enough to satisfy accomplished choirs yet accessible enough for developing ensembles, meaning you can program it across multiple groups without compromise.

What to expect

These arrangements balance traditional carol warmth with thoughtful, elegant harmonies that feel both familiar and fresh. The writing invites singers into the text with natural phrasing and memorable counterpoint, creating moments of genuine beauty without technical excess.

Who it's for

Treble choirs, developing mixed ensembles, church choirs with limited alto or bass sections, and educational programs seeking singable sacred literature with musical depth. The 2-part format accommodates groups of varying size and experience without loss of artistic integrity.

How to get the most out of it

  • Protect the independence of each line by rehearsing voices separately first, then bring them together only after each part feels secure melodically.
  • Let the text shape your phrasing rather than forcing symmetrical phrase lengths; Parker's settings often follow natural speech rhythms that feel conversational and genuine.
  • Explore the harmonic color by listening to how the two parts create vertical sonority, not just horizontal independence, particularly at cadence points.
  • Keep dynamics restrained and responsive to harmonic movement; these arrangements reward subtle shading over dramatic gestures.

How to use it

Build a complete Christmas concert around this collection as a foundation, filling out the program with soloists, small ensemble pieces, or instrumental selections to vary texture. Alternatively, choose individual titles to complement longer choral works or to anchor the opening or closing moments of a winter celebration.

Skills your students will build

  • singing sustained harmonic lines independently while maintaining awareness of the other voice part
  • responsive phrasing that follows text rather than rigid metric patterns
  • hearing and executing two-part vertical sonority in ensemble context
  • interpretation of sacred vocal music through attention to lyrical content
