Douglas E. Wagner began his career as a high school music educator and administrator in the Chicago area, where he spent three decades building choral and instrumental programs before transitioning to full-time composition. He holds degrees in music from Butler University and has become one of the most prolific composers in American music education, with over 3,500 published works spanning choral literature, band, orchestra, handbells, organ, piano, and vocal music.

Since 1973, Wagner's compositions have sold well over seventeen million copies and appear regularly in concert halls, school performances, and broadcasts across the United States and internationally. He now resides in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he continues to create music that addresses the practical and artistic needs of church musicians, school choirs, and ensemble directors.
