Robert Sheldon's compositions for wind band appear on contest lists and concert programs across the globe, performed by ensembles at every level. His work has earned him recognition from the American School Band Director's Association, Phi Beta Mu, and ASCAP, and his contributions to music education extend through his authorship of Sound Innovations for Concert Band, a foundational resource for many programs.

Sheldon maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor for honor bands, clinician at universities and state conferences, and commissioned composer. He has conducted his own works at Carnegie Hall, Orchestra Hall, Boston's Symphony Hall, the Sydney Opera House, and the Kennedy Center. In 2020, VanderCook College of Music awarded him an honorary doctorate in recognition of his impact on wind band education and composition.
