Dr. Janet Galván

Dr. Janet Galván, Professor Emerita, Ithaca College, has received multiple awards for excellence, including the Helen Kemp Lifetime Achievement Award, NCCO lifetime membership, IC Faculty Excellence, Distinguished Alumni, and NYACDA Outstanding Director.

Her guest conducting spans from professional orchestras to elementary choruses. She has been a conductor/clinician in Carnegie Hall, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall, and David Geffen Hall, as well as in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Brazil, and throughout Europe. In addition, she has been a conductor/clinician at national music conferences and the World Symposium on Choral Music. She was one of the first conductors of the ACDA National Children’s Honor Choir. She was the artistic director for the Ithaca Children’s Chorus (a “y’all come” group) for 35 years. The ensemble was noted for its healthy singing, diversity of repertoire and tone, and musicality.

Her chapters in books include: Choral Reflections: Insights from American Choral Conductor-Teachers; Teaching Music through Performance in Choir; and The School Choral Program. She was advisor to Latin Accents, a series with Boosey & Hawkes. She was also a contributing author to several other books with multiple authors. Working With Young Singers, Vol. 1, includes a chapter about Galván.
