About This Collection

Description

Grade 1 string orchestra music that balances accessibility with engaging repertoire. Teachers gravitate toward Five Note Fiddler by Brian Balmages and Dragonhunter by Richard Meyer, both of which work well for ensembles just building foundational skills. You'll find arrangements of classical masterworks alongside original compositions, folk traditions, holiday selections, and pieces inspired by film and Broadway, giving you flexibility to program for concerts, festivals, and contests.

Highlights

Teachers keep coming back to Five Note Fiddler by Brian Balmages and Dragonhunter by Richard Meyer, both widely adopted at this level. A Joyful Celebration, also by Balmages, and Finding Figaro round out the popular choices for early-year programming and festival preparation.

Recently added

Katie O'Hara LaBrie's Spirit of Noel, Caryn Wiegand Neidhold's Midnight Vortex, and arrangements of Brahms and Rossini were added recently, expanding options for seasonal and classical-based programming.

Composer Spotlight

Brian Balmages brings a conductor's perspective to composition, having written works performed from elementary schools to Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. His music spans orchestral, band, and chamber idioms, and he holds the A. Austin Harding Award from the American School Band Directors Association.

Richard Meyer taught strings at all levels for 35 years and built the Oak Avenue Intermediate School orchestra program from 29 students to 200. His pieces reflect deep classroom experience and are designed with student engagement and growth in mind.

Bob Phillips is recognized as an innovator in string pedagogy and has authored over 25 book series used across classrooms nationwide. His compositions are performed by thousands of string students annually and reflect his expertise in large group instruction and stylistic variety.

Loreta Fin, a first violinist with the Sydney Youth Orchestra and longtime Principal Viola player with the Queensland Pops Orchestra, draws on her chamber and orchestral experience to craft pieces that balance technical clarity with musical substance.
